table saw, literally
"table saw, literally" is a weekend modification ("mod:" akin to hack, edit, re-imagine) of a tired, portable table-saw produced by Bosch. The vertical adjustment crank no longer worked and the plastic body was deteriorated to the point that it was bothersome in use. In taking it apart to fix the vertical adjustment mechanism, I broke a mount and had to repair the new damage. Once repaired, I adapted the motor and table surface, as well as the fence, to an actual table. The table top serves as an out-feed surface, while the table body carries the tool and incorporates a new lower shelf on wheels. I was reluctant to use the saw in its old state but now it's far more enjoyable.
Serendipity had me find this table though a local consignment group, on Facebook. I had my eye out for a solid surface to salvage for making tool cart tops into work surface. While spending an evening fixing the saw, I wondered how I might adapt the table to replace the fatigued plastic saw base.
The work surface is now comprised of two primary parts: the original saw top and approximately half of the original oak, table top. The saw has a right-hand extendable wing which, when deployed, leaves an opening that will nicely receive a router, increasing the utility of both the saw fence and table.
The saw is intentionally incomplete, for now. I've tried to add as few pieces as possible, while making it function well. I want to get to know it a little bit even before adding some necessary reinforcement and support; thereafter I'll fit in some storage. without making it a complete monolith.
Unfortunately I did not photograph either of the "before" conditions. At some point, perhaps I'll detail the process of trying to fix the saw; whereby I broke it worse than it had been prior to my attempted remedy. I learned through the repair and it engendered this table improvement, so I'm thankful for the mistake.
